Apples, by Frank Browning, published in 1988 by North Point Press, 241 pages, hardbound. Out of print, limited copies available here. Price: $28.95 (lists for $31)This is an exceptional book on apples, with a great discussion on apple genetics, their origins, the ascendancy and decline of apple varieties in the United States and even a chapter on what it takes to set up a backyard orchard. Highly recommended.
Mr. Browning has authored several books (see below) and is a frequent commentator on National Public Radio.
